About Car Finance Claim Calculator

Who runs Car Finance Claim Calculator, what the free calculator does, how the site is funded, and why you can always complain to your lender for free.

Last updated: 10 October 2026 · Effective from: 10 October 2026

Car Finance Claim Calculator is a free online tool that estimates what you could get back on a UK car finance agreement under the Financial Conduct Authority's (FCA) motor finance redress rules. You enter what you know about your agreement, and the calculator applies the FCA's published method to give an estimate. It is an estimate, not a promise of payment.

You can claim for free. You do not need a claims management company or a law firm to complain about car finance commission or to take part in the FCA's redress scheme. You can complain to your lender yourself, and if you are unhappy with the answer, the Financial Ombudsman Service is free to use. Claims firms usually take a share of any compensation, which the FCA says can be up to 36% including VAT.

1. What this site does

This site does three things:

  1. 1
Estimates. The calculator works through the FCA's redress rules (policy statement PS26/3 and the CONRED 5 and CONRED 6 rules in the FCA Handbook) using the figures you enter.
  2. 2
Explains. Our guides set out who the scheme covers, what lenders must do, and how to complain yourself, using the FCA, the Supreme Court and the Financial Ombudsman Service as sources.
  3. 3
Points to the free route first. Every page that mentions claiming tells you that complaining to your lender is free, and links to the FCA's list of lenders and template letters.

2. What this site does not do

We want to be clear about our limits, because the car finance claims market has had a lot of misleading advertising.

  • We do not handle claims, give advice on your individual claim, or represent you.
  • We do not refer anyone to a claims management company or law firm, and we do not pass your details to anyone.
  • We do not contact your lender for you, and we cannot see your agreement or your credit file.
  • We are not a law firm, a lender or a credit broker.
  • We are not the FCA, the Financial Ombudsman Service, or any government body, and we are not endorsed by them. Where we quote them, we link to the original source so you can check it.
  • We do not decide whether you are owed anything. Your lender does that under the scheme rules, and the Financial Ombudsman Service can review it.

3. Why the site exists

The FCA's redress scheme sets out a published method for working out compensation, but the rules are long and technical. This site turns that method into a calculator anyone can use, and explains the free route to a claim in plain English.

What we aim to give every visitor is a plain answer to four questions: am I likely to be covered, roughly how much, how do I claim, and do I need a company. The honest answer to the last one is no, and we say so on every page where it matters.

4. How the calculator works, in brief

The calculator follows the FCA's published method. In outline, it checks whether your agreement falls inside the scheme's date range (6 April 2007 to 1 November 2024), works out which of the FCA's remedies would apply, and then calculates the amount, including compensatory interest at the rate the FCA set. Where you do not know a figure, such as the exact commission, the calculator says what it has assumed and shows a range rather than a single number.

The full method, its sources and its known limits are on our calculator methodology page. Every figure the calculator uses is traced to an FCA, court or Financial Ombudsman source, and each one is dated.

5. How the site is funded

The calculator and guides are free to use. We do not show adverts yet. The operator plans to fund the site with display adverts in future. Before any advertising is added, we will update our How we make money page and our privacy and cookie policies. No claims firm pays us, and we do not pass anyone's details to a claims company, law firm or advertiser.

6. Who runs this site

Car Finance Claim Calculator is based in Halesowen, B63 1EB, United Kingdom.

Regulatory status: We are not authorised by the Financial Conduct Authority. We do not handle, refer or advise on claims, and we do not collect or pass on anyone's claim details.

We have no connection with any firm the FCA has named on its Warning List, including "CarFinanceClaim", which the FCA has identified as a trading style of Black Knight Global Ltd.

7. Who writes and checks our content

Our content is written and checked by the Car Finance Claim Calculator editorial team.

Every guide and every calculator figure is researched from primary sources (the FCA Handbook and FCA publications, the Supreme Court judgment in Hopcraft, Johnson and Wrench [2025] UKSC 33, legislation, and the Financial Ombudsman Service) and checked against them before it is published. Each page shows the date it was last reviewed. Our editorial policy explains how we check facts, date them and correct mistakes.

8. Check who you are dealing with

Whoever you deal with about a car finance claim, you can check them for free:

  • Claims management companies: use the FCA's firm checker and the FCA Register.
  • Solicitors and law firms in England and Wales: use the Solicitors Regulation Authority's Solicitors Register.
  • Unsolicited calls or messages saying you are owed car finance compensation: the SRA and the FCA both warn that scammers pose as lenders or claims firms. Do not give bank details to anyone who contacts you out of the blue.
