HP Finance Claim

HP finance claim estimates here follow the FCA's published compensation rules: enter your hire purchase agreement for a car, van or motorbike and see what it could pay back.

The free route: you can complain to your lender yourself, and the FCA says you do not need a claims company or a law firm to take part in its scheme. Find your lender on the FCA's list.

Your agreement

1About the agreement

Month and year is enough. It is on your agreement or your credit file. We use the 1st of the month and show that.

The title of your agreement says which type it is.

Any motor vehicle counts. Your answer does not change the figure.

Whose name was the agreement in? *

The scheme covers people, sole traders and small partnerships. It does not cover companies.

Did you live in the UK when you took out the finance? *

A complaint that is still open does not count.

Your answer does not change the figure. We use it to point you to that lender's free complaint route.

2The figures

£

Do not count your deposit. The FCA's rules call this the "total amount of credit".

%

The annual percentage rate on your agreement, for example 9.9. Tick "I do not know my APR" if you do not have it.

Count the monthly payments, for example 48. Leave it blank and we use 48 months, the default in the FCA's rules.

3Commission and extras

£

Most people do not know this, because your lender holds the figure. Leave it blank and we show a range.

Could the dealer choose your interest rate, and earn more commission for a higher rate?

This is a discretionary commission arrangement. We assume there was one when you are not sure. Your lender decides.

%

Only your lender knows this. Leave it blank if you do not know.

Did the dealer have to offer this lender's finance first, or only this lender's finance?

This is a tie. We do not assume one when you are not sure. A tie with a car maker's own finance company does not count where the dealer was a franchised dealer with the same branding.

Our car finance claim calculator needs no sign up and passes nothing on.

Scheme status as of 13 October 2026: the FCA scheme rules (PS26/3) are in force but partly suspended by the Upper Tribunal since 1 July 2026. The legal challenges are listed for 16 to 26 February 2027. Until the case ends, lenders do not have to calculate or pay compensation (redress), and no payments are expected before 2027.

Hire purchase deals the FCA scheme covers

The scheme covers motor vehicle HP agreements from 6 April 2007 to 1 November 2024 where commission was payable by the lender to the dealer or broker. The FCA treats PCP as a type of hire purchase.

The deal also needs one of three FCA-listed arrangements you were not told about:

  • a discretionary commission arrangement, letting the broker raise your rate to earn more;
  • high commission, at least 39% of the cost of credit and 10% of the loan;
  • a contractual tie giving one lender exclusivity or first refusal.

A 0% APR, or commission of £150 or less (£120 before April 2014), counts as fair under the FCA rules.

Conditional sale agreements count too

Conditional sale agreements sit in the same scheme, on the same tests as HP. The difference is ownership. Under HP you hire the vehicle until you take up the option to purchase; under conditional sale you are buying it, and ownership passes once the instalments are paid (Consumer Credit Act 1974, section 189).

How the HP estimate is worked out

Most results average the commission and an estimated overcharge, plus interest; the overcharge assumes an APR 17% lower from April 2014, or 21% lower before. The FCA says one case in three is capped, and an APR in the lowest 5% for its year gets nothing. See the calculator methodology.

Questions about HP claims

Is a car lease (PCH) covered?

No. Personal Contract Hire is a lease, not credit, so the scheme excludes it.

My HP deal ended years ago. Does it still count?

Yes. The main exception in PS26/3 is a high-commission-only deal that ended before 26 March 2020 and clearly disclosed the commission.

What do HP claims pay on average?

The FCA says people who get compensation receive around £830 per agreement on average, some more and some less. Some agreements get nothing. The car finance claim checker covers the scope questions.

A complaint to your lender is free, and so is the FCA scheme.
