Disclaimer for Car Finance Claim Calculator
Calculator results are estimates under the FCA's published rules, not offers or guarantees, and not legal, financial or tax advice.
Last updated: 13 October 2026 · Effective from: 10 October 2026
Every figure the calculator shows is an estimate under the Financial Conduct Authority's published redress rules. It is not an offer, not a guarantee and not a decision. Only your lender decides what, if anything, you are owed under the FCA scheme, and the Financial Ombudsman Service can review that decision. Nothing on this site is legal, financial or tax advice.
You can claim for free. You do not need a claims management company or a law firm to complain about car finance commission or to take part in the FCA's redress scheme. You can complain to your lender yourself, and if you are unhappy with the answer, the Financial Ombudsman Service is free to use.
1. An estimate, not an offer
The calculator applies the FCA's method to the figures you enter. Your lender will apply the same rules to its own records, and the result can be different, sometimes very different, because:
- Your lender holds facts you probably do not have. The commission paid to the dealer, whether there was a discretionary commission arrangement, and whether the lender had a tie with the dealer all decide which remedy applies. If you do not know them, the calculator assumes them and tells you so.
- Your lender can show the relationship was fair. The scheme presumes unfairness and loss where an arrangement was not properly disclosed, but lenders can rebut those presumptions in some cases. The calculator cannot know whether yours will, so it assumes it will not.
- Caps and exclusions apply. The FCA rules cap many awards, pay nothing where your APR was among the lowest in the market for that year, and exclude some agreements altogether, such as leases (personal contract hire), very large loans and agreements outside 6 April 2007 to 1 November 2024.
- Arrears can be deducted. Your lender may set off unpaid arrears on the same agreement against what it owes you.
- The figures you enter may be wrong. Please check them against your agreement or statements.
Our calculator methodology page lists every assumption and its source.
2. Many agreements will get nothing
The FCA estimated, when it confirmed the scheme on 30 March 2026, that around 12.1 million agreements (37% of those made in the scheme period) are eligible for compensation, with an average of about £829 per agreement. Most agreements are therefore not eligible, and individual results range from nothing to more than the average. The FCA also says that in about 1 in 3 cases the final amount will be capped. An average is not a forecast of what you will get.
3. The rules may change
As at 13 October 2026:
- The FCA's scheme rules (policy statement PS26/3) came into force on 31 March 2026.
- The Upper Tribunal partly suspended the scheme from 1 July 2026 while it hears four legal challenges. Until those challenges end, lenders do not have to calculate or pay redress under the scheme.
- On 13 October 2026 the FCA confirmed that the Tribunal will hear the challenges between 16 and 26 February 2027, with a judgment expected in the following months.
- No scheme payments are expected before that judgment. The FCA has told lenders to plan for the possibility that the scheme, or parts of it, is quashed. In that case there may be no scheme, and complaints would be handled in the usual way.
The calculator uses the rules as the FCA published them on 30 March 2026. If the Tribunal changes them, estimates made before that change may no longer be right. We will update the calculator and date the change.

4. Not advice
The site gives general information and estimates. It is not legal, financial or tax advice, and using it does not create a solicitor and client relationship, an adviser relationship or any duty of care to advise you. We do not tell you whether to make a claim, which route to use, or whether to accept an offer. If you need advice about your own situation, free help is available from Citizens Advice and MoneyHelper, and you can take legal advice from a solicitor.
5. No promise about timing or outcome
We cannot promise that you will receive any payment, how much, or when. Do not borrow, spend or make financial plans on the strength of an estimate.
6. Tax on interest
Part of any redress is compensatory interest. The FCA understands that this interest will generally be subject to income tax, and that tax is typically deducted at source at the basic rate. The calculator shows the interest part separately so you can see it. This is general information, not tax advice. If you do not pay income tax, you may be able to claim tax back from HMRC.
7. Not connected with the FCA, the Ombudsman or the government
Car Finance Claim Calculator is an independent website. We are not part of, approved by or endorsed by the Financial Conduct Authority, the Financial Ombudsman Service, the Solicitors Regulation Authority or any government body. When we quote them, we link to the source.
8. Claims firms and adverts
We do not handle claims, and we do not refer anyone to a claims management company or law firm. No claims firm pays us. If you choose to use a claims firm, it will usually charge you a share of any compensation: the FCA says claims firms and law firms can take up to 36% including VAT.
We do not show adverts yet. If we add display adverts in future, an advert will not be a recommendation, and some may be for claims firms or law firms. Our How we make money page explains more.
9. Links to other websites
We link to official and third-party websites so you can check what we say. We do not control them and are not responsible for their content, accuracy or availability.
10. Our responsibility
Our terms of use set out the limits of our responsibility. Nothing in this disclaimer limits any right you have as a consumer that cannot be limited by law.
11. Keeping this page current
We review this disclaimer whenever the scheme's status changes. The date at the top shows the latest review.
